Question 1:In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
When deciding upon what genre we wanted to base our media product on, we researched many different genre trailers. This allowed us to gain a brief understanding of the codes and conventions of different types of trailers. From the research, we decided to make our media product a hybrid of comedy and action. We felt we could portray the genre of comedy reasonably well due to our comical characters. Additionally, we felt action was an easy genre to portray, the use of specific props, such as guns could easily be accessed, therefore would be easy to portray in our media product. The combination of comedy and action is commonly done in the film industry, which enabled us to research the films, to gain some knowledge of what to include in our own media product.
During the process of our research, we really liked the idea of producing a British independent film, supported by an American film production. This is because, using an American film production would widen our audience, and sell the film greatly. Therefore, when we researched comedy/action trailers, we had to research both British and American comedy/action trailers, and also research comedy and action separately, to gain us an understanding of what to include to portray the genres individually. We firstly researched a British comedy, The Inbetweeners Movie. We decided to research this film as it consists of a group of young adults, on a wild, adventurous adventure. The film consisted of many humorous puns, scenes and it portrayed a close friendship between the young adults, which we wanted to accomplish in ours. We watched the trailer repeatedly in order to gain us ideas for our teaser trailer. From watching and researching the trailer, we gained an efficient amount of ideas which we could use, develop and challenge.
To portray the comedy element of our trailer, we decided to use some ideas from The Inbetweeners Movie, we particularly liked the idea of creating inter-titles. The use of inter-titles in the Inbetweeners trailer were used to illustrate the storyline briefly to the audience, allowing the audience to gain a brief understanding of the film.
